Pen and Ink

As I mentioned before I had been looking at some Charles Dana Gibson drawings recently and they inspired me to take out my dip pen and ink well. I managed to keep from spilling my ink well and creating any kind of catastrophic mess at the coffee shop (as I was a little nervous about) and here are the resulting drawings...

Charles Dana Gibson

I've been looking at my Charles Dana Gibson book lately for some inspiration. Taking it out with me sketching one night, I sat down and drew this first sketch. Then, I sat back and looked at the book for a while with a cup of tea.

When I had finished looking at the book, the guy I had just drawn was still there so I drew him again, this time allowing aspects of Gibson's style to influence me. It's nice to try new things and it's interesting to see the two side by side. Gibson also inspired me to take out my old dip pen and do some drawing in ink, that's coming up in future posts.

and here's another in my regular style.

Carpenter's Pencil

For this first one I was using a carpenter's pencil. I use graphite sticks sometimes for larger figure drawings so I thought I would try it out in my sketchbook. Although this drawing came out alright, I found it a little clumsy in a small space so I think I'll stick to the mechanical pencil for now.

Ali

Originally from Afganistan and having lived in New Mexico for a long time, Ali recently moved to Rhode Island to be closer to his daughter. He was a fun character to paint and much nicer than he looks in my painting. Sometimes sitting still for two or three hours doesn't give a model the most cheerful face.

New Sketchbook

I just started a new sketchbook. It's always hard to put an old one on the shelf and start a new. Here is the first page...

Alice

A blast from the past, Alice has been a model at the Rhode Island School of Design for a long time and I've drawn her countless times as a student. Recently, she came to pose for the Monday night portrait group and her hair is still a challenge to paint.
