Source

A new piece I'll be bringing to Illuxcon next week in Reading, PA.

For thousands of years, multitudes of agricultural societies have worshiped this bringer of light and warmth, knowing it's critical (if magical seeming) role in growing their life-sustaining crops.

Our sun is the engine that powers our solar system. With slight exception, all the energy we use came from this star. Temperature variations on the earth's surface drive the winds. For billions of years, organisms have been photosynthesizing it's light and storing the energy that we now use as fossil fuels. Our atmosphere traps the sun's heat and keeps us from freezing to unlivable temperatures every night. We have evolved in a stable balance of atmospheric insulation, but now, as we burn billions of years of stored solar energy, we risk turning our energy savior into our fiery scourge. Luckily, with photovoltaic (solar) panels we have found a way to directly harness the sun's energy without altering our atmosphere. Hopefully we will soon make broad use of these scientific (if magical seeming) devices to avoid angering our source.

Dance

Continuing the stardust series, this piece will be appearing in the Inner Visions show opening at Abend Gallery, Saturday Oct 8th.

Study for Stardust VI

Another study for the stardust series. This will be up on Every Day Original tomorrow at 11:45 eastern time. These have been going fast lately.

“The nitrogen in our DNA, the calcium in our teeth, the iron in our blood, the carbon in our apple pies were made in the interiors of collapsing stars. We are made of starstuff.”

This quote from Carl Sagan represents one of the most poetic truths of our scientific reality. The heavy elements that we are made of weren't created at the beginning of time. They were created in the nuclear furnaces of earlier generations of stars that have since exploded and spread their material across the universe. We are literally made of stardust. This allows us a new and profound feeling of connection to the stars we see in the sky, to the universe, and to everyone in it. Neil deGrasse Tyson calls this idea "the most astounding fact" in the video at this link: http://youtu.be/9D05ej8u-gU

Fathom

The vast depth of space and the multitude of stars, worlds, and galaxies is nearly impossible for our minds to fathom, but it's an awakening experience to attempt. This video may help - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xiWJoILkpVc

This is another piece appearing in tonights opening of the "Edge of Reaism" at Abend Gallery in Denver, 6-9pm. I'll be there, so if you're in the area, come say hi!

D&D Curse of Strahd

These two illustrations were painted last year for Dungeons & Dragons' recently released "Curse of Strahd" Adventure.

In the first painting, vistani seer, Stanamir, conjures and vision in the flames of a campfire. I'm happy to say this painting has been accepted to Spectrum 23! It's also featured in an article on the D&D website.

In the second painting, a little creepier than my usual work, the witch, Morgantha, takes human form to sell her drug laced pies in a misty oppressed town.

In still more news, I had the honor of being a juror of acceptance for  this year's National Juried Exhibition with the Oil Painters of America. I think it's going to be a great show and since my vote doesn't count towards my own entries I'm also happy to say Shadowy Deep has been accepted to the show as well.

Pluto Unveiled

A new painting to commemorate humanity's first detailed glimpse of Pluto and it's moon, Charon, made last year by the New Horizons spacecraft. It was an amazing accomplishment, and a momentous event to be alive for as the face of the dwarf planet became known to humans for the first time in history!

It takes light 4.6 hours to reach Pluto from Earth. To get a sense of just how far away that is, and how amazing it is that we got there, check out this great video by Wylie Overstreet and Alex Gorosh. At nearest approach, Pluto is about the same distance as Neptune.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zR3Igc3Rhfg

Brooding and a Second 2nd Place

After a few months hiatus from Every Day Original to catch up on a few things, I'm now back to my regular posting date of the 21st of the month. That means this new mermaid goes up for sale tomorrow morning at 10am EST. Be ready, they don't usually last long.

There is more good news about my painting,
Reaching Europa. It has received a second 2nd Place Award! This time in the Infected by Art annual competition, also claiming Gold in the Oil/Acrylic/Watercolor category. See all of the great winning artworks here.
