A Monday night portrait.

Oil, 16 x 20 inches

  1. first of all, great painting. i know these are studies but this one looks like it is almost a finished work.

so in that regard i wanted to share a thought. i think this could be even better if you bring the large brown background shape on the left side of his his nose down to his chin. the tone is good for a fuzzy background tone but it's height is distracting from the profile.

this is a stunning image rob. probably the most character and emotion i've seen from you. kudos mate.

  2. You know, I was thinking the same thing when I was scanning the painting. I don't know why I can't ever seem to see these things until it's too late. You have backed up my suspicions though, so I should probably go back and bring that shape down a bit.
    Thanks Rich!

  3. This is a very good portrait...You have created the contours of his face very well...I like his intense expression and good lighting too!

  4. I love the strong forms you are using! The colour its also very expressive!

  5. Ooo this is a gorgeous painting. That highlight on his temple is so slick and awesome.
